Former First Lady Michelle Obama was met with thunderous applause when she made a surprise appearance at Sunday’s Grammy Awards – but not everyone was so impressed. In a text conversation that Obama shared to her Instagram account on Tuesday, it was revealed that Obama’s own mother, Marian Shields, didn’t seem to think that her daughter was much of a celebrity.
“Did you meet any of the real stars after?” Obama’s mother asked. “I am a real star,” replied the former first lady, to which her mother simply responded “yeah.”
Obama is currently on tour for her debut book, Becoming, a memoir about her and her husband, 44th President Barack Obama‘s, life together. The former first lady shared this exchange with her mother with her audience in Phoenix, Arizona, while promoting the book. Becoming was the best-selling book of 2018 – but, hey, I guess it takes a lot to please Ms. Shields.
