Michael Phelps turned the 2024 Paris Olympics into a family affair on Tuesday, as he cheered on Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team from the stands. The 23-time Olympic gold medalist, who retired from swimming in 2016, watched with pride as the American women’s gymnasts secured the gold medal in their final competition. Phelps was accompanied by his wife, Nicole, and their young son, Nico.
In the stands, Phelps sported a red and white striped polo shirt, a nod to patriotic colors, while Nicole wore a fitted white zip-up with “USA” emblazoned on the chest. Their infant son, Nico, was dressed in a white T-shirt featuring patriotic designs and wore blue noise-canceling headphones to shield his ears from the enthusiastic crowd.
The victory marked a milestone for Simone Biles, who earned her fifth Olympic gold medal with this win. Phelps, who is known for his previous endorsements with Wheaties and Subway, has been a prominent advocate for mental health, drawing on his personal experiences with depression throughout his career.
Alongside Nicole, Phelps is a father to four sons and continues to use his platform to promote awareness and support for mental health issues after his arrest in 2014.
While Phelps and his family cheered from the stands, their support reminded everyone of the true spirit of the Olympics and the personal stories behind the global competition.
