Season two of Big Little Lies has been long awaited by fans of the show for nearly two years. The first episode aired on HBO Sunday night and Meryl Streep only added to the shows already powerful cast. The shows leads include Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern, and when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it was announced that Streep was brought on for season two last year.

Streep plays Alexander Skarsgard’s character’s mother. Skarsgard played Kidman’s abusive husband on the show, and *spoiler alert* died on the last episode of season one. It’s unknown whether Skarsgard will come back for season two, but Streep is an exciting addition to the cast.

Streep came onto season two to play his mother, and in episode one she is seen helping Kidman’s character with her two twin sons after the confusing loss of her husband. The first episode teases at the relationship Streep’s character will have with Kidman’s as well as the other lead ladies. A scene between Witherspoon and Streep’s character hints at a drama filled-season when Streep’s character called Witherspoon’s Madeline “untrustworthy.”

Streep is no stranger to awards, but only one episode into the new season, and fans are already talking about her Emmy-worthy performance. After the shows first season, Big Little Lies was nominated for 19 awards including winning Best Television Limited Series at the 2018 Golden Globes. They were also nominated for Primetime Emmy awards, BAFTAScreen Actors Guild awards and more. It’s safe to say that with the addition of Streep to the cast, Big Little Lies will be returning strong to the next awards season.
