Melissa Benoist, best known for playing Marley Rose on Glee, will be returning to TV on CBS’ superhero series Supergirl.
Benoist has officially been tapped to star in CBS’s Supergirl, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The hourlong drama will center on the iconic DC Comics character of Kara Zor-El – Superman’s cousin who escaped her native Krypton during its destruction.
David Rapaport Casting announced the news of Benoist’s casting on Twitter with a picture of the actress next to that of the comic book hero.
Supergirl will follow Zara as she comes into her powers. Living with her foster family the Danvers, she’s been taught to control the superpowers she shares with her cousin. However, when a disaster forces her to break out her talents in public, she gets a taste of her powers and doesn’t want to harness them again.
Benoist reportedly beat out The Vampire Diaries/The Originals‘ Claire Holt among a number of others for the coveted part of Supergirl. Her last major role was on the big screen in the Oscar-nominated Whiplash opposite Miles Teller.
