Meghan Markle Will Walk Down The Aisle Part-Way With Prince Charles, Then Alone In Feminist Statement

On Saturday, the day of her royal wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has chosen not to be chaperoned for much of the succession down the aisle. Markle is making British Royal history, no other royal bride in the United Kingdom has walked down the aisle unescorted.

She will be accompanied in this first part of the walk by her bridesmaids and page boys, with the senior church figure walking ahead. Then Prince Charles, Harry’s father, will join her when she reaches the Quire, where the main royal guests will be seated. He will then walk Markle down the Quire aisle to the foot of the altar but he will not be giving her away. In the final steps, Markle will approach Harry on her own.

“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way.”

Some might call it a feminist statement, and while it is unprecedented, Markle and her family have been anything but traditional during the time leading up to the wedding. Her father, Thomas Markle, was supposed to walk her down the aisle but is now unable due to abrupt health issues after he staged a series of paparazzi-style photos of himself.

On her big day, Markle will arrive at Windsor in a car with her mother, Doria Ragland, traveling up to the castle via the Long Walk, where the public will get their first look at the bride to be. The wedding takes place at noon local time (7 a.m. ET) on Saturday, May 19.
