Maya Rudolph Returns As Kamala Harris In The Star-Packed Cold Open Of ‘Saturday Night Live’
4.5/5
On September 28, Saturday Night Live premiered its season 50, with Maya Rudolph and other special guests returning for the show’s crammed cold open.
Many fans wondered who would play some of the biggest names in the 2024 presidential election.
Rudolph stepped up to the podium as Harris delivered the line, “Well, look who fell out of a coconut tree,” a reference to the V.P.’s viral video, before ushering vice president candidate Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) on stage.
“Walz” made it known that he is a man of the people, repeatedly mentioning that his suit was “from Costco,” adding that “it’s a Kirkland brand.”
SNL alumnus Andy Samberg appeared as Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff. Samburg’s Emhoff adored Harris, claiming, “I feel like I’ve been one of those movies where Seth Rogen dates Charlize Theron. I mean, how did I get this woman?”
Dana Carvey made a surprise return to SNL for the first time since 2016 to play Joe Biden.
The sketch also cut to a Trump rally, in which cast member James Austin Johnson played the former president. Johnson’s Trump can be seen begging attendees not to leave as he calls out, “I can see you trying to leave, but the doors are locked.”
For the last 50 years, SNL has generally stayed true to itself by combining political satire, comedy and pop culture quips. However, as the show has reached its half-century mark, it has sparked questions about what is next for sketch comedy.
While Lorne Michaels, the show’s creative and executive producer, is now 79, in a June interview, he said that he plans to continue the show for “as long as I can feel I can do it.”
