Matt Reeves Will Direct ‘The Batman’ Replacing Ben Affleck
Batman is an essential franchise for DC Comics and Warner Bros., and a new film starring the superhero is in development. Matt Reeves, whose resume includes Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield, will direct The Batman.
MATT REEVES SIGNED ON TO DIRECT THE BATMAN
In a statement, Reeves aired his anticipation in getting to work on the legendary property:
“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”
Ben Affleck, who portrays the vigilante in the DC Extended Universe, was originally slated to direct. However, upon his concern that he couldn’t sufficiently perform as the director and act as the film’s protagonist, he elected to step down in the former role. Affleck learned “a tremendous amount” from his first time under the cape, and he wants his solo outing to be “really special.”
Reeves’ next movie is War for the Planet of the Apes, which will invade theaters on July 14.
Furthermore, DC’s young cinematic universe has two movies slated for this year: Wonder Woman and Justice League. These films are scheduled to release on June 2 and Nov. 17, respectively.
Additionally, although it isn’t part of DC’s live-action universe, Batman fans can currently enjoy The Lego Batman Movie.
