Marlon Wayans New Show ‘Marlon’ To Reflect His More Serious Side
Marlon Wayans is getting serious with his new TV show, Marlon.
MARLON WAYANS ON NEW SHOW MARLON
The actor says the series will reflect the relationship he has with his kids and their mother. Marlon airs Wednesdays on NBC and stars Wayans as “Marlon Wayne,” a social media star who co-parents with his ex.
Wayans, 45, says he feels “like I have the career of a 24-year-old. I guess I’m a late bloomer. I’ve been maturing a lot in the past five years, and I’m doing stuff with more substance.” The show, he says, is about 87% accurate to his own life. “I always wanted to be a show where I could be me,” he said. “I think it’s a different kind of TV dad, and it’s a different kind of TV family and [the character] has kind of a different approach to things. ”
Wayans is raising his two kids, aged 15 and 17, along with his ex-wife. The actor uses the show as a teaching mechanism with his children, saying, “‘Don’t do nothing stupid or you are going to wind up on TV.’ I said, ‘Go ahead son, get arrested. That would be a hell of an episode.'”
“It’s really funny, but there’s also a lot of heart,” he explains. “I don’t want to just make people laugh anymore, I want to also make them think and feel. I’m a lot deeper and more spiritual than the perception of me.” He adds, “I’m theatrically trained and it’s good to do it all,” he said. “Every role I do, whether it be comedy drama or action, I just want it to be credible. I want to be like water — pour me in to any glass and I’ll take shape.”
So far, Marlon has been receiving solid reviews. However, as The Hollywood Reporter puts it, “Marlon is too much Marlon.”
