Man of Steel, the latest incarnation of the Superman Marvel comic, made its world premiere on Monday night in New York City.

The star-studded film event was held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Walking the red carpet were the film’s many stars, including lead Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon.

Cavill, for whom Man of Steel is providing the first leading role of his career, promises that the Zack Snyder-directed film offers a deeper glimpse into who Superman is. “This time you get to see the soul of Superman a lot more and he’s had a life experience where he hasn’t had lots of friends and he’s lonely and no one can empathize with him,” Cavill told Euronews during the premiere.

Screenwriter David S. Goyer believed that the story of Superman required a new dimension, having been a known hero for three-quarters of a century. “Superman has evolved over the last 75 years. If he didn’t evolve he would not remain this vital iconographic character and in order for him to remain vital and relevant he has to keep changing,” he said on the red carpet. “So you have to sort of risk the wrath of the hard-core fans by altering a few things.”

So far, Man of Steel has been well-received by critics who have embraced Cavill’s take on the American hero, with the New York Post’s Lou Lumenick writing, “Cavill may be as charming as the late great Christopher Reeve.”
