Lucy Hale, best known for starring on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, admitted that auditioning for the role of Anastasia Steele for the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie was a less than comfortable experience.

Lucy Hale's '50 Shades' Audition

Hale, 25, took a stab at the coveted role despite the daunting task of channeling the steamy nature of E.L. James' erotica series. “It was a two-page monologue of exactly what you would think it would be,” Hale told MTV News. “Very uncomfortable, but it was sort of one of those things where you just had to go for it or you’re just gonna look lame — hopefully, I didn’t look lame.”

Hale admitted it was “unlike any audition I have ever done before in my life” and something, “I don’t want my grandmother watching.”

Though she knew going into the audition room that she was going to be stretching beyond what she’s ever done before as an actor, Hale felt that the chance to read for the female lead in Fifty Shades of Grey was something she couldn’t pass up.

“I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it,” Hale said. “Mainly, I was just interested in doing something risky and doing something a little different than my character on PLL so it took me out of my comfort zone.”

Hale is currently a series regular on Pretty Little Liars, playing Aria Montgomery. She’s also an up-and-coming country recording artist, having just put out her debut album Road Between.

The role of Ana in Fifty Shades was ultimately given to Dakota Johnson, who beat out a number of other rumored contenders, including Alexis Bledel and Nina Dobrev. She'll be seen playing opposite Jamie Dornan's Christian Grey when the film debut's Feb. 13, 2015.
