Lorde, the 17-year-old pop singer who looks and sounds more mature than her years, has a birth certificate that proves she’s still a minor.

Birth Certificate Confirms Lordes' Age

When the New Zealand-born Lorde performed at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, she donned a sleeveless white button-down shirt tucked into a pair of wide-legged black pants. Her teenage face was covered in alabaster powder and she wore dark eye and lip makeup. It was hard for many to believe that this was the girl who became the youngest person to ever win the Grammys’ Song of the Year award for her smash hit “Royals.”

In addition to appearance sparking debate about her age, is the levelheaded candor Lordes delivers in interviews. She talks about her peers – the Justin Bieber’s and Selena Gomez’s of the world – as though they’re floundering in the immaturity of their youth. Taylor Swift, she’s called “too flawless and unattainable.”

First and foremost fueling the Lorde “birther” movement is the teen’s incredible talent. Not only does she sing “Royals,” she wrote it – as well as the other songs on her debut full-length album Pure Heroin.

In an attempt to put the rumors to rest, The Hairpin paid $17.02 to the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs to get a copy of Lordes' birth certificate. As had been previously reported, Lorde, born Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Conner, is 17. She was born Nov. 7, 1996.
