'Lincoln,' 'Argo' Lead 2013 Golden Globe Nominations

It's already that time of year, when the nominations for the Golden Globes — the biggest precursor to the Oscars —are announced, and the nominees for 2013 hold a few pleasant surprises.

While the honors were led by anticipated, high-profile flicks like Lincoln, which led the way with seven nominations, a few less conspicuous films were recognized, including Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, starring Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and Edward Norton; the little-known comedy-drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, with Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor; John Madden's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson; and the sleeper hit, Silver Linings Playbook, which features The Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence and The Hangover's Bradley Cooper.

This is not to say that the Golden Globes nominees totally missed the big names. Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Ben Affleck's Argo and Ang Lee's Life of Pi all walked away with a number of honors — the latter three being recognized in the Best Motion Picture, Drama category along with Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, and the former being nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

In television, Mad Men will predictably duke it out with Breaking Bad and Homeland, with The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire rounding out the category of Best Televison Series, Drama.

The 2013 Golden Globes will air on January 13, 2013, live on NBC, with hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
