Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” Hits #1, Rapper Tweets ‘Let’s Go Gay Agenda!’

Lil Nas X’s new song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 last week.

The song, which was released on March 26, is his second No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 song. “Old Town Road” held the spot for 19 weeks in 2019.

Lil Nas X celebrated the accomplishment on Twitter on Monday.

“y’all told a 19 year old who had just escaped the lowest point of his life that he would never have a hit again. you told him to stop while he’s ahead. he could’ve gave up. but 4 multi platinum songs and 2 #1’s later, he’s still here. thank you to my team and my fans! ily,” he tweeted.

He also released a video he filmed in June 2020 to congratulate his future self.

“Congratulations, you deserve all the good s*** that’s happening to you right now,” he told himself. “You pushed through, ‘cuz. It’s been a lot of s—.”

Lil Nas X released the music video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” on March 26, causing criticism for how open he was with his sexuality. In the notes for his hit song, he wrote that “Montero” “will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist” and hit back at haters who said he was promoting “an agenda.”

He also collaborated with streetwear company MSCHF on a pair of “Satan Shoes” to accompany the release of the song. The shoes are modified Nike Air Max 97s and decorated with with a pentagram pendant and references Luke 10:18. The shoes are also said to contain a drop of human blood in the sole.

Nike sued Lil Nas X and MSCHF over the shoes and denied collaboration over their creation.
