Lil Boosie was granted an early release from a Louisiana State Penitentiary this week, nearly 5 years after he was imprisoned on drug charges.

Lil Boosie Released

Boosie, whose real name is Torrence Hatch, was arrested in 2009 on a marijuana charge. Originally, he was only sentenced to four years behind bars. However, the 31-year-old rapper was caught trying to smuggle drugs into the prison during his stay, leading a judge to add eight years onto his original sentence, reported TMZ.

Though Boosie is leaving the penitentiary early, he’ll remain on parole until 2018.

Boosie could have been behind bars for a much longer period of time. In addition to the drug charges, he was implicated in the murder of Terry Boyd. Facing first-degree murder charges, Boosie was accused of hiring the then 17-year-old Michael “Marlo Mike” Louding to kill Boyd. However, Boosie's lawyers were able to convince the jury that Boosie hadn't been the one to hire Louding.

Lil Boosie New Music

Now that he’s out of jail, new music can be expected from Boosie in the not too distant future. He’s claimed to have around 500 songs that he’s ready to record and get out to his fans.

“I have about 500 songs at the moment. I’m ready to get in the studio with the best producers. I feel that I’m making the best music I’ve ever made,” he told Spin magazine in 2013. “The more I go through in life the better my music gets and it’s been crazy the last three years. I keep my music heartfelt and stick to making real music. I wouldn’t even say it’s hip-hop music. My music is ‘reality rap.’ Hip-hop music can make you dance and bob your head, but it can’t make you cry or touch your heart like reality rap.”
