Actress Leah Remini filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige.

Remini is claiming years of attacks and is alleging that they have been stalking, threatening, defaming and harassing her. In addition, she is seeking “to end Scientology’s policies against Suppressive Persons so that current and former Scientologists, and others who wish to expose Scientology’s abuses, including journalists and advocates, may feel free to hold Scientology accountable without the fear that they will be threatened into silence.”

According to the lawsuit, Remini is maintaining that she is the victim of “intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors via hundreds of Scientology-controlled and -coordinated social media accounts that exist solely to intimidate and spread misinformation.”

She is alleging defamation as she claims that Miscavige and other Scientology members created false video statements about her. This includes that she “was abusive to her mother and daughter and that she is a racist.”

Additionally, she claims that the church hired someone with “a history of mental illness and a violent criminal record” to stalk her. In 2020, a man was arrested after driving his car into the security gates in her community and demanding that residents tell him where she lives. This man was arrested a second time after he falsely accused her of having hostages in her house.

These actions caused Remini to fear for her life, so she was forced to hire bodyguards to protect her.

Remini’s attorney Edwards Henderson Lehrman spoke about the allegations in a statement, “This lawsuit does not challenge Scientology’s ability to defend itself through legal means.”

Remini revealed her suit on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

“After 17 years of harassment, intimidation, surveillance, and defamation, I am filing a lawsuit against Scientology and David Miscavige,” the actress wrote. “Scientology’s final objective of silencing me has not been achieved… People who share what they’ve experienced in Scientology, and those who tell their stories and advocate for them, should be free to do so without fearing retaliation from a cult with tax exemption and billions in assets.”

She continued to speak about the power that Scientology holds in society. “The press has a right to report about Scientology without facing a sophisticated intelligence operation from Scientology to destroy their personal lives and their careers,” she wrote. “Children, mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles have a right to request welfare checks on their family members without fear of an operation activated against them by Scientology for doing so.”

She ended her statement by asserting, “With this lawsuit, I hope to protect the rights afforded to them and me by the Constitution of the United States to speak the truth and report the facts about Scientology without fear of vicious and vindictive retribution, of which most have no way to fight back.”

The Church of Scientology has not commented on the lawsuit.

Remini has spoken publicly about the harm Scientology causes including hosting the docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. She is a former member – her mother converted her when she was 8 years old and left the organization in 2013.
