King Charles III Takes The British Throne, Camilla Named Queen Consort After Queen Elizabeth’s Death

After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, her eldest son Charles is now the monarch of the U.K. and the symbolic leader Commonwealth.

It is largely a ceremonial position, and his mother Elizabeth’s general lack of discussion of politics during her reign is thought to be a reason for her high popularity.

IN MEMORIAM 2022: 100 GREAT CELEBRITIES WHO DIED THIS YEAR!

Once the Prince of Wales with the longest Royal tenure of that position to boot, he has chosen the royal name King Charles III, according to Buckingham Palace. His second wife, Camilla, is now the Queen Consort.

While both Royals have a far less divisive place in public opinion now. They will both have to reckon with the past controversy of their alleged affair while Charles was still married to Princess Diana.

Camilla met young Prince Charles in the early 70s, and they were photographed several times socializing at polo games and other events. After Charles left for the Navy, Camilla accepted a proposal from her on-and-off lover Andrew Parker-Bowles in 1973.

Charles maintained a friendship with Camilla and Andrew, and he married young noble Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Charles and Diana’s marriage difficulties became public knowledge over a decade later when they separated in 1992, and Charles has always claimed that he only rekindled his relationship with Camilla when the marriage was past saving.

Andrew and Camilla divorced in 1995, and there are phone records proving an extramarital relationship between Camilla and Charles as early as 1989. All people involved in this situation were subjected to unrelenting media scrutiny, which ended in Princess Diana’s tragic death in a car crash trying to escape paparazzi.

Camilla’s title was up in the air for much of Queen Elizabeth II’s life. When they married in 2005, it was announced that her title would be Princess Consort rather than Queen Consort. However, Elizabeth changed her mind in this year, a move that “touched and honored” the couple according to their representatives.

As Prince of Wales, Charles has been passionate about issues of architectural preservation of historic buildings in England, and supported some initiatives in organic farming through the country.

He has also faced some criticism for alleged corruption in the operation of his charities.
