Kim Kardashian has helped several female athletes escape Afghanistan. Members of the women’s youth development soccer team were brought to London alongside their families, where they will start new lives.

The women had to leave their country due to new rules put in place by the Taliban, who prohibit women to play sports. Ever since the Taliban have returned to power many have feared how the women in Afghanistan would be treated as a result, with many attempting to escape the country.

Khalida Popal, a former captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s team said she felt “so happy and so relieved” that the girls made it out unharmed.

“Many of those families left their houses when the Taliban took over. Their houses were burnt down,” Popal told reporters. “Some of their family members were killed or taken by Taliban. So the danger and the stress was very high, and that’s why it was very important to move fast to get them outside Afghanistan.”

The team originally managed to escape into Pakistan, where they were able to stay temporally as they applied for UK visas. The plane that flew them to the UK was charted by Kardashian, alongside a New York rabbi and several organizations.
