Comedian Kevin Smith recently suffered through a heart attack while filming his Silent But Deadly special for Showtime. However, in his interview with Late Show host Stephen Colbert, Smith discussed the unlikely substance that helped him survive it.

Smith admits he was concerned that he was “too high” that day. The 47-year-old actor continued, saying, “I’d smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show and then I smoked a joint right before the show and then I got off stage and all of the sudden I had a heart attack.”

Understandably, Smith asked the doctor if his drug use was a factor in initiating his cardiac arrest, but he was pleasantly surprised by his doctor’s response. “He goes, ‘No, quite the opposite. That weed saved your life.’ And I was like, ‘Do tell! Like, what do you mean?'” The doctor responded, “You kept calm. They told you you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life.'”
