The 2017 Tony Awards had no clear-cut frontrunner, after “Hamilton” took home 11 statues last year.
Kevin Spacey hosted the 2017 awards show, and “Dear Evan Hansen” was the biggest winner of the night. The musical won six awards, including Best Musical. “Oslo” won Best Play. “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” led with 12 nomination, but took away only two technical statues, for Best Set and Best Lighting.
Spacey accepted the gig as host after several others turned the job down, and kicked off the show with a self-deprecating song and dance. The actor did impersonations and skits from the various plays up for awards, and even invited Stephen Colbert up on stage to mock the new “Groundhog Day The Musical.”
Mark Hamill introduced this year’s “In Memoriam,” which featured a tribute to his former co-star Carrie Fisher. Another Star Wars alum James Earl Jones took home a Tony for a lifetime achievement in the theater.
