Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have maintained a strong friendship since starring in smash hit Titanic together in 1997, but contrary to speculation, the two were never anything more than pals.
Winslet and DiCaprio played star-crossed lovers in Titanic and a combustible married couple in 2008’s Revolutionary Road. Over the years, the costars have fostered a lasting friendship, one so close that DiCaprio gave Winslet away at her 2012 wedding to Ned Rocknroll.
“I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing,” Winslet told Marie Claire U.K. “It’s so disappointing for people to hear that, because in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we never did.”
Winslet added, “He always saw me as one of the boys; I’ve never really been a girly girl. We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours and it was a shock to the system.”
DiCaprio will turn 40 later this year and Winslet will soon join him in the milestone age, but the actress says the two will definitely not be having any joint celebrations. Apparently, DiCaprio likes the spotlight for himself – and Winslet wouldn’t be into it either.
“He’s 40 this year and I’m 40 next—that’s weird. Isn’t that weird? He wouldn’t have a joint party with me. He really wouldn’t. Definitely not. He likes to have his moments,” she said. “But also I don’t think I’d want to have a joint party with him, more to the bloody point!”
