On Friday, Kate Middleton revealed her recent cancer diagnosis in a video posted to social media. The diagnosis came after her abdominal surgery in January. Middleton did not disclose which type of cancer she has but said she is undergoing “early stage” chemotherapy treatment.

Middleton is not the only member of the Royal family with cancer. In early February, King Charles III also revealed he was diagnosed with cancer and is too going through treatment. Similar to Middleton, King Charles was diagnosed following a procedure for an enlarged prostate.

In the video, Middleton thanked her supporters for their well wishes and her medical team for their care.

“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who’ve taken great care of me for which I’m so grateful.”

She talked about undergoing “major abdominal surgery” which was thought to be noncancerous at the time.

“However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present,” she added.

Middleton explained how she and Prince William have dealt with the matter privately while balancing their family. Middleton stated it had taken time for the couple to both recover and “appropriately explain” the situation to their three young children without alarming them.

The Princess of Wales, 42, stepped away from the public after her surgery. Middleton’s first official photo since the surgery came on U.K.’s Mother’s Day where Middleton posted a photo with her three children. The photo was revealed to have been edited by the princess and promptly removed from news outlets. Middleton apologized for the photo on social media.

Middleton was then spotted at a local farm shop with her husband Prince William. The public outing alleviated concerns about her health by onlookers who said Middleton appeared “happy” and “well.” However, no photos of their visit were captured.

The news squashed conspiracy theories about the Princess’ health that surfaced during her time away from the public. Middleton is asking for privacy and respect as she continues her recovery and treatment.
