Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has separated from his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau.

They were married for 18 years and share three children: Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrian, 9.

Trudeau broke the news of their separation on an Instagram post.

“Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” Trudeau wrote. “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.”

“For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy,” he concluded.

The pair met in 2003 at a charity event Sophie was hosting and got engaged the following year. They tied the knot on May 28, 2005, and welcomed their first child two years later.

In an official statement made to the media, Trudeau and Sophie have “signed a legal separation agreement.”

“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” it stated.

The statement also said that they will “remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment.”

“Both parents will be a constant present in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together,” the statement said.

Although Trudeau and Sophie have already signed separation documents, the pair and their three children will reportedly be on vacation next week.
