Justin Timberlake spoke with Zane Lowe on Beat 1 Radio about the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show wardrobe malfunction that exposed Janet Jackson‘s breast.
Lowe began by congratulating the singer on his return to the Halftime Show for the third time, second as a solo act. The previous trip was in 2004, and became one of the most controversial performances in Super Bowl history. A botched move by Timberlake caused one of Jackson’s breasts to be shown on live television, an incident now known infamously as the “wardrobe malfunction.”
When speaking with the Super Bowl authorities, Timberlake said he was briefly questioned about the event. “It wasn’t too much of a conversation,” the singer said. “It was just one of those things where you go, like, ‘What do you want me to say? We’re not gonna do that again,'” he added with a laugh.
As for making amends with Jackson, Timberlake says he did. “I don’t know that a lot of people know that,” he said. “I mean, I don’t think it’s my job to [tell people], because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”
As for the actual performance, Timberlake admits that he did something wrong. “I stumbled through it. You know, to be quite honest I had my wires crossed,” he said. “And it’s something that you have to look back on and go, like, ‘OK, well, you know, you can’t change what’s happened, but, you know, you can move forward and learn from it.'”
The first part of Timberlake’s interview with Lowe was broadcast Thursday at 1 p.m. The pair speak mostly about the singer’s new album, Man of the Woods, which debuts Feb. 2, two days before Super Bowl LII. Watch the interview below.
