Jurassic World 2 is officially – and unsurprisingly – a go after the first one hauled in an impressive 1.5 billion at the global box office. So, what’s in store for the dinosaur-centric sequel?

‘Jurassic World 2’

Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World and is already on board to write Jurassic World 2, has an idea for the direction he wants to take the sequel and whatever films might follow in the franchise.

“Whether or not I am involved in later installments or not, I felt it was important for me to set the table,” Trevorrow told Wired UK. “I know they’re going to want to make them, I know that Stephen [Spielberg] definitely wants to make several of these movies, and I want to do my job in setting the table for something that can be rich and thoughtful and interesting.”

Trevorrow’s idea of “rich and thoughtful and interesting” requires that the dinosaurs eventually make their way to the mainland. And, one way that could happen will be a diversification in who has the capability to create a dinosaur in the days after their extinction.

“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast,” said Trevorrow. “I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment.”

“And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source?” added Trevorrow. “It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?”

Other news about Jurassic World 2 is that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both onboard to return to their roles of Owen and Claire. Spielberg will also be back to executive produce. But, while Trevorrow is taking over writing duties, he’s not planning to direct the picture. As of yet, no one as been named as his replacement.
