Among the fashion elite participating in New York Fashion Week, currently in full swing, actress Julia Fox continues to stand out with her unconventional fashion choices.

Her recent appearance at the LaQuan Smith show on Monday, in particular, made waves.

Fox has long been known to push boundaries and defy norms with her outfits. From a tiny bow-adorned lace bra to a bikini layered over thermals to a floor-sweeping veil paired with a harness, she embraces audacious fashion fearlessly and her latest look was no exception—a black dress with a plunging scoop-neck and strategic cut-outs.

Fox opted to go braless and confidently flaunted underboob. To combat the chilly New York weather, she layered a voluminous white faux fur coat over her ensemble and exuded the trending mob wife aesthetic. Her look was completed by a pair of towering black patent platform heels.

The volume of Fox’s outfit was accentuated by her recently dyed grey hair and bleached eyebrows. White and purple eyeshadow enhanced her stripped-back appearance. Her style choices challenge societal expectations and the male gaze, and she serves as a contemporary role model for women who seek freedom and self-expression through their wardrobes.

While Fox has become a strong example of a woman who dresses for the female gaze, this concept long predates her. Dressing for the female gaze means choosing styles and garments that resonate with women’s sensibilities (often avant-garde and eccentric ) while defying traditional male understandings of female fashion. This approach was pioneered by Leandra Medine Cohen, the creator of Man Repeller, a publication turned sartorial category and playfully challenged conventional notions of attractiveness. Cohen understood that if a man didn’t appreciate her outfit, she was doing something right.

As fashion continues to evolve, Fox and other trailblazers such as Cohen inspire not only women, but all people, to celebrate their individuality, creativity, and the freedom to dress for their own satisfaction, regardless of societal expectations.

Last October, Fox spoke to uInterview exclusively about the moment she decided to act as a producer on the film Something You Said, which tells the story of a trans woman who is on vacation with her family.

“I was on a set in the middle of glam to walk on a runway,” she recalled of reading the script. “And I was just like, ‘Everyone shut up.’ I was like so into the movie and it just really drew me in and you know it’s one of those movies that just like touches your heart in a way.”
