Judy Carne, ‘Laugh-In’ Star, Dies At 76

British actress Judy Carne, who was best known for starring on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, died last week. She was 76.

Carne’s passing was confirmed on Tuesday. She died at Northampton General Hospital on Sept. 3 after suffering from pneumonia, according to USA Today.

Carne rose to fame on Laugh In during the late 60s, popularizing the “sock it to me” catchphrase. During her three-year stint on the show, she endured a number of humiliations after saying the phrase, including getting showered with water, always throwing herself into the physical comedy of the ongoing gag.

After three years on Laugh-In, Carne left to pursue other career opportunities, and made appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. She also appeared on a number of scripted series, including Cade’s County, Thriller and Ironside.

Eventually, Carne’s ongoing addiction to heroin sidelined her career.

She opened up about her addiction and subsequent health and legal troubles in her 1985 autobiography, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside. In the book, Carne also detailed her marriage to Burt Reynolds and the other relationships she had during the course of her career.
