American Idol judge Katy Perry cried during one particular performance at the start of Sunday’s Hollywood Week, where contestants continued to compete to make it on to the ABC hit show.

After receiving a phone call from his sick mother informing him that she would be getting surgery the next day, contestant Dimitrius Graham, 27, asked the judges if he could FaceTime his mother in for his song. Perry was the first to speak to his mother Lorraine, reassuring her that she would be safe and protected by the angels during her surgery, whereupon she turned the phone to face Graham as he performed “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. Almost immediately, Perry broke down in tears for the remainder of the performance, while her fellow judge Luke Bryan retrieved tissues for her.

When Graham finished, Perry handed the phone over to Lionel Richie, who smiled at Lorraine and assured her, “your boy did it, sweetheart.” Later that episode, Perry told Graham he would be moving on to the next round.
