Warner Bros. is looking to expand their still-young cinematic universe with Batgirl. Joss Whedon is helming the film, and he was recently asked about it.
Whedon was interviewed twice at the premiere for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Both interviews convey his enthusiasm for DC’s Bat-themed heroine.
With Variety, Whedon discussed his excitement to see “a girl in the cowl.” However, regarding an actress, he doesn’t “have an eye on anybody.” Whedon continued by adding how he’s dedicated to casting the ideal woman as Batgirl, although she won’t necessarily be portrayed by a big-name actress.
With The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon addressed his fascination with Batgirl. Her mentor famously saw his parents gunned down in a dark alley as a kid, but Batgirl lacks that impetus. He asks, “Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life? How intense and driven that person is … I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
The Hollywood Reporter also mentioned how Whedon called Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige concerning his shift to DC. Feige appreciated Whedon’s courtesy, and he supports Whedon’s new project. “We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome,” Feige said.
Batman is becoming a focal point for the DC Extended Universe films. Furthermore, Batgirl might not be the only member of Batman’s family to get the blockbuster treatment, as Warner Bros. is eyeing Nightwing as well.
Carpenter will be supported by artists Ravyn Lenae, Amber Mark, and Olivia Dean.
