Canseco, the former Major League Baseball All-Star, had been cleaning his gun at his Las Vegas home Tuesday afternoon when the gun went off, reported NBC News. The athlete, who hadn't known that the gun was loaded, damaged the middle finger on his right hand.
"It was a serious hand injury," Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddod said of the incident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. "There was nothing suspicious. There was no alcohol involved, just a misstep with a handgun."
Leila Knight, Canseco's financée, was in the house when Canseco had the accident with the gun. "I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," she told the Los Angeles Times. "It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery."
Doctors were trying to save what remained of his middle finger, though regardless of the success of the surgery, Canseco will never have full use of the finger.
Canseco, who admitted to using PEDs in a 2005 memoir, was a six-time MLB All-Star. Throughout his career as an outfielder and designated hitter, playing for Texas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees, he racked up 461 home runs.
