Johnny Depp made a surprise visit to his hometown, Owensboro, Kentucky over the weekend amid rumors of his possible return to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Depp grew up in Owensboro and still has family there. He reportedly asked fans to keep his family visit a secret until after he left the area.

Following a lengthy period of personal and professional turmoil, it’s rumored that Depp could make a return to the Pirates franchise after being dropped during his legal battle with ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Recent reports have claimed that Disney has reached out to Depp about a possible reprisal of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, a Disney Plus spin-off about Sparrow’s early life. The alleged deal is supposedly worth $300 million.

Depp played Sparrow in all five Pirates films over the course of 15 years. He last inhabited the role in 2017 for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

If Depp lands this newest role, it could add to a list of personal wins in recent months. Depp won his lengthy lawsuit against Heard in June after a jury unanimously decided her public writings constituted defamation. He was awarded $15 million in damages.

In July, Depp earned $3.6 million with his debut art collection sale and released an album with musician Jeff Beck, titled 18. Depp has subsequently joined Beck for most of his North American tour.
