John Travolta at the 2014 Oscars
John Travolta, who figures prominently in HBO’s documentary on Scientology, Going Clear, has spoken out in defense of his religion once again.
Travolta is currently making the press rounds for his new movie The Forger, and has, unsurprisingly, also been asked about his ties to the controversial Church of Scientology.
“Forty years for me, I’ve been part — and I’ve loved every minute of it, and my family has done so well with it,” Travolta told Good Morning America‘s Amy Robach. “It’s a beautiful thing for me and I’ve saved lives with it. Saved my own life several times. Through the loss of my son [Jett], it helped me every step of the way for two years solid.”
Travolta believes that Scientology detractors could come around to his positive point of view of the religion founded by the late L. Ron Hubbard if they took the time to read the literature.
“People really need to take the time and read a book. That’s my advice,” said Travolta. “You can read A New Slant on Life or Dianetics. I think if you really do you’ll understand it, but unless you do you’ll just speculate — and I think it’s a mistake to do that.”
Travolta and fellow actor Tom Cruise are the biggest names associated with Scientology.
The Going Clear documentary, based on Lawrence Wright‘s 2013 book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief, attempts to deconstruct the church and its practices through a look at the history of its founder and interviews with those who’ve left Scientology, including director Paul Haggis.
