Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took another stab on this year’s election, enlightening Americans on the positions of Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson.
To be clear, Oliver presents third party candidates as a positive thing in an election. “I would love for there to be a third party candidate, I even understand the argument that a third party candidate can put a new issue or new solution on the table,” Oliver said. “But it’s hard to make the case that that is what’s happening here.
He starts his 18-minute rant by saying that we should not consider Stein and Johnson as spoiler candidates, despite the fact that historically, third party candidates have siphoned votes away from the major party candidates. So Oliver takes them seriously, and goes over some of their key points and plans for their presidencies.
Starting with Stein, Oliver played some footage of her answering questions about her plans, most of which she is unable to answer coherently. He then does the same with Johnson. Oliver did a good job to not vilify the candidates, but merely called them out using their own words in videos. Neither candidate seemed to know how exactly the government works, and made excuses from “if I could wave a magic wand” (Johnson) to “a magic trick that people don’t need to understand any more about” (Stein).
Oliver concluded his segment by describing the election at hand. “There is no perfect candidate in this race, and when people say you don’t have to choose the lesser of two evils, they are right, because you have to choose the lesser of four,” began Oliver. “And that means, as uncomfortable as this is, everyone has to own the floors of whoever they vote for, whether they are a lying, handy, narcissistic sociopath, a hawkish, Wall-Street-friendly, embodiment of everything that some people can’t stand about politics, an ill-tempered mountain molester with a radical dangerous tax plan that even he can’t defend, or a conspiracy-pandering political neophyte with no clear understanding of how government operates.”
Watch below. As he put it, “the lack of coverage they complain about so much might have genuinely benefited them because their key proposals start to crumble over the slightest scrutiny.”
