Anna Marie Tendler, the multimedia artist who split from John Mulaney in a widely-covered divorce in 2021, has shared her challenges with mental health that occurred just before the end of her marriage.

In an essay for the women’s magazine Elle, Tendler wrote about the loss of her French bulldog Petunia in April and opened up about how the dog helped her through her divorce. Tendler wrote, “[Petunia] never let me out of her sight. In fact, she watched me intently, as if I was the thing she now needed to guard.”

She explained that when she returned home from the hospital for mental health issues, including suicidal ideation and self-harm, Petunia acted as her protector.

Tendler became the subject of high-profile media scrutiny in May 2021 when she split from Mulaney after six years of marriage. News of the couple’s breakup was made public after Mulaney had been to rehab after a relapse of his long-standing alcohol and drug addiction.

This shocked many of Mulaney’s fans as the comedian had often talked about his life with Tendler and Petunia in his standup. Mulaney then received backlash when his relationship with Olivia Munn, as well as the actress’ pregnancy, became public. Mulaney discussed the response to his relationship with Munn, joking it got “mixed reviews.”

In January 2022, Tendler told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview that she was finally anticipating the next chapter in her life. “I feel lucky that I get to be standing on the precipice of all of these new things, that I get to possibly experience, and who knows how they will go?” she said. “And there is certainly something exciting about that.”
