John Mayer Cancels Tour Due To Throat Problem

Listen up, all you John Mayer, 34, fans out there. The Grammy winner has cancelled his upcoming 21-city U.S. tour and all other scheduled live performances due to ongoing throat problems.

It's bad timing for Mayer, who just debuted his fifth's album's first single, "Shadow Days," and was planning to kick off a tour to promote the album, Born and Raised, on April 9. While the release of the record is still on track for May 22, Mayer has cancelled all of his upcoming singing performances, he explained on his website.

"I want to explain this a bit more in depth than I have in the past, because I know there's some confusion as to what this condition is," he wrote. "A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it's in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there's no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it's one giant pain in the ass."

This isn't the first time that Mayer has cancelled a tour. In 2010, he called it quits on his scheduled European shows for what was rumored to be the same condition. While he specifies that his departure from singing is, at the moment, "indefinite," he insists that not all is lost. "I'll find a way to make it mean something," the singer promised his fans.

"Because I don't make a very good anything-other-than-a-musician, I'm going to begin writing the next album very soon. I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there's no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring. Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence, so I hope you'll understand…."

Born and Raised hits stores on May 22.
