Joey Chestnut, Sonya Thomas Win Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest
Joey Chestnut once against was the victor at the 97th annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. Eating 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes, Chestnut’s seventh win was also record-breaking, besting his record-holding 2009 tally of 68.
The reigning hot dog eating champ had little in the way of competition during the July 4th showdown. Matt Stonie was the distant second, managing to eat just 51 hotdogs. For those who closely follow the world of competitive eating, there was little question of whether or not Chestnut would hold onto his title. At 6ft tall and 210lbs, Chestnut handily consumed the 21,000 calories in hotdogs and buns.
On the women’s side of the iconic Coney Island event, there was another reigning champ recapturing a title – Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas. The 100-pound 45-year-old was very nearly beaten by second place finisher Juliet Lee, who ate 36 hot dogs to her 36 and three quarters. This was Thomas’ third win at the competition.
Chestnut went home with the winnings of $10,000, while Thomas took home $5,000.
