Mexico’s National Security Commission confirmed Sunday that Guzman had escaped the Altiplano Federal Prison on Saturday, reported CNN. Spokesman Monte Alejandro Rubido García revealed that Guzman escaped through a hole in his cell that led to a mile-long tunnel that was both lighted and ventilated.
Guzman was discovered missing from the maximum security prison in south central Mexico after he went missing from his cell. He was last seen on surveillance footage nearing a shower area that inmates also use to wash their belongings.
A manhunt has been launched to find and recapture Guzman. Toluca International Airport has also been closed in an effort to find him.
Guzman is considered to be one of the world’s most powerful drug kingpins, running the Sinaloa cartel, which is the biggest supplier of heroin in the northeastern United States.
Guzman last escaped from prison back in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart. He remained on the run until 2014, when he was arrested at a beach resort in Mexico.
