Joan Rivers, who stopped breathing during a routine outpatient surgery on Thursday, was reportedly on life support Saturday.
Rivers, 81, was placed in a medically induced coma Thursday night and remains hospitalized and on life support at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital, reported the New York Post. Her family, including her daughter Melissa Rivers and grandson Connor, have been at her bedside hoping for her recovery.
Though doctors had elected to put her in a medically induced coma, Rivers is now solely being kept alive by machines, sources have told TMZ. Rivers family will allegedly have to determine whether or not to keep the veteran comedian on life support. Apparently, there is hope that if life support is turned off, she’ll take over breathing on her own.
On Thursday morning, following a busy week that included red carpet coverage on the MTV Video Music Awards and the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards for E!’s Fashion Police, as well as promoting her most recent book – Diary of a Mad Diva – Rivers underwent surgery on her vocal cords at Yorkville Endoscopy. During the procedure, Rivers stopped breathing.
In a 911 call from the clinic, the caller said, “We have somebody in either cardiac or respiratory arrest,” reported TMZ. Rivers, who was immediately deemed in critical condition by first responders, was then rushed to Mount Sinai where she’s remained in intensive care.
