In a night of surreal moments at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, the end of Jane Fonda‘s acceptance speech was one of the most surprising. The actress wished musical theater legend Tommy Tune a “happy birthday.”

Fonda was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her long-time, successful career. She used her acceptance speech as a time to speak out on the revelation that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has no black members in their voting ranks.

“Stories can change our hearts and minds, they can help us see each other in a new light, to have empathy, to recognize that, for all our diversity, we are humans first,” Fonda said. “The non-linear, non-cerebral forms that are art speak on a different frequency and generate a new energy that jolt us open and penetrate our defenses so we can sed and hear what we may have been afraid of seeing and hearing.”

Fonda closed her acceptance speech by saying, “And happy birthday Tommy Tune!,” It was indeed his 82nd birthday, but viewers didn’t know what to make of the statement.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were even surprised at the unexplained birthday wish, they added the sentiment themselves at the the of the ceremony.

Tune has retired and has not received an award since he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Tony Awards. He also picked up 10 Tonys for acting, directing choreography over his career.

While Tune is known more for his stage work, he has appeared on screen in Hello, Dolly!, The Boy Friend and Arrested Development.
