Jane Fonda and Robert Redford appeared on Megyn Kelly‘s new NBC show Megyn Kelly Today to promote their new film, Our Souls at Night.

JANE FONDA SHUTS DOWN MEGYN KELLY

But Kelly had a different topic to bring up – plastic surgery. “You’ve been an example to everyone in how to age beautifully and with strength and unapologetically,” Kelly told Fonda. “You admit you’ve had work done, which I think is to your credit. But you look amazing…. I read that you said you’re not proud to say you’ve had work done. Why not?”

Fonda looked aghast and paused before asking, “We really want to talk about that now?”

“Well, one of the things people think when they look at you is how good you look,” Kelly said. But Fonda was not amused. “Well thanks. Good attitude, good posture,” she said quickly. “I take care of myself. But let me tell you why I love this movie that we did, Our Souls at Night, rather than plastic surgery.”

Redford had Fonda’s back the whole time, and laughed as she took control of the conversation.

The talk show went on as scheduled with the stars discussing their film, but the moment was already saved and shared by thousands on social media. “If I ever need to conjure a Patronus I will close my eyes and remember the transcendent faces Jane Fonda made at Megyn Kelly this morning,” wrote one Twitter user. “So how come @megynkelly didn’t ask @RobertRedfcrd if he had any plastic surgery?? Way to stay composed @Janefonda #doublestandard,” added Sarah Michelle Gellar to the conversation.

This is the second time Kelly caused controversy on her new show. In an interview on Monday with the cast and creators of Will & Grace, the host brought a male fan up to meet the group and asked, “Is it true you became a lawyer – and you became gay – because of Will?” Her comments drew criticism from fans and from the show’s star Debra Messing. “The itinerary just said Today Show appearance. Regret going on,” she wrote on Instagram. “Dismayed by her comments.”
