Jamie Lynn Spears provided perspective on her current relationship with her older sister, pop star Britney Spears, in an interview while promoting her new book Things I Should Have Said.
Spears sat down with GMA reporter Juju Chang to speak in-depth about her upbringing, and her sister’s conservatorship which was terminated last year. The conservatorship granted their father, Jamie Spears, control over the singer’s financial and medical decisions for 14 years, and she began publicly calling the arrangement abusive in June of last year.
Jamie Lynn said she knew little of the details of the conservatorship when it began in 2008. “When it was put into place I was 17 years old, I was about to have a baby. So I didn’t understand what was happening, nor was I focused on that.” Spears also added that “I [understood] just as little about it then as I do now.”
She also claimed that she never was a direct part of the conservatorship financially. “There was no overseeing funds or something like that, and If there was, that was a misunderstanding,” she said.
Jamie Lynn said that she even supported her sister directly once Britney made it clear she was attempting to end the conservatorship. “So, when she needed help, I set up ways to do so,” the Zoey 101 actress stated. “I set up ways to do so, went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship.”
She was criticized last year for remaining silent on the issue until after Britney’s public statements and claimed then that she was waiting for her sister to speak out first, and that she had recommended Britney to get new legal counsel years before she eventually did.
There seems to still be tension between the two sisters. Britney recently unfollowed Jamie Lynn on Instagram. Regardless, Jamie Lynn said “that love is still there,” for her sister, and that she doesn’t know why there are hard feelings between them two.
