Jacob Wohl & Jack Burkman Accused of Faking Sexual Assault Claims Against Pete Buttigieg

Far-right conspiracy theorist Jacob Wohl is back in the news, once again for allegedly trying to frame a political figure for sexual assault. In October of 2018, Wohl was banned from Twitter after trying to falsely accuse Special Counsel Robert Mueller of sexual assault, but it looks like the ban hasn’t stopped him from scheming.

On Sunday, a Medium profile named Hunter Kelly posted that he had been sexually assaulted by Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg a couple of years ago. Kelly’s profile on Medium was also accompanied by a profile on Twitter, both of which had only been created in April. On Facebook, the real Hunter Kelly, who is a gay Republican college student, issued a statement assuring the public that the Medium and Twitter accounts were faked.

“I WAS NOT SEXUALLY ASSAULTED,” Kelly posted. “It’s important for everyone to know that I was not sexually assaulted and would never falsely accuse anyone. To keep it brief for now – I was approached by a political figure to come to DC to discuss political situations from the standpoint of a gay Republican. When I arrived they discussed Peter Buttigieg and started talking about how they would be working a campaign against him. I went to bed and woke up to a fake Twitter @RealHunterKelly and an article that I in no way endorsed or wrote. I have since left and am working on a formal statement to give to everyone including the Buttigieg family. Thank you for standing behind me and knowing that I would never accept or allow any of this.”

The Medium and Twitter posts have since been taken down, but Wohl’s accomplice Jack Burkman isn’t backing down. News of the hoax was first reported by The Daily Beast, who cited an unnamed source who confirmed that Wohl and Burkman had previously approached him asking him to come forward with a false report of sexual assault against Buttigieg. Burkman has questioned the magazine’s source and has challenged them to come forward.

When asked about the accusation, Buttigieg said, “I’m sure it’s not the first time somebody is going to make something up about me. It’s not going to throw us. Politics can be ugly sometimes but you have to face that when you’re in presidential politics.'”
