Donald Trump‘s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, faced a barrage of criticism on social media after she shared a clip of her husband Jared Kushner‘s 2023 October interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, where Kushner emphasized the need to try different paths when faced with challenges.
Kushner said, “I just think it’s just something where, if you want to accomplish something, you know, a lot of people, I hear, complain about what other people do or why it’s hard, or why it’s impossible.”
While Kushner acknowledged that he has been blessed throughout his life, he maintained that when he encountered challenges or goals, he would just focus and say, ‘What can I do?’…It’s just, if you want to accomplish something, you just have to go for it.”
On January 7, Ivanka posted a clip of the interview with a link to the full video, and gushed, “I personally love this clip as it reveals the determined optimist who firmly believes that there’s always a solution if you’re willing to try enough paths. I love this about Jared… and it’s a good reminder as we start the new year!”
Online critics quickly pointed out the fact that Kushner was born into a wealthy family and dismissed his remarks as detached from the realities faced by most people. Comments echoed a sentiment that Kushner’s success was simply a result of his wealthy background and not indicative of the struggles faced by the majority of people.
While both Ivanka and Kushner declined salaries when they served as advisers in Trump’s administration, a report by the nonprofit watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) revealed that the couple earned up to $640 million in outside income through that period.
Kushner’s business dealings also drew scrutiny, particularly his receipt of a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia for his private equity firm, Affinity Partners. The investment, which included substantial management fees, came just months after Trump left the presidency. The transaction faced objections from a Saudi Public Investment Fund review panel, which cited concerns about the inexperience of Affinity Fund management and unsatisfactory due diligence. However, those objections were ultimately dismissed by the Crown Prince and acting chair of the fund.
The social media backlash against Ivanka’s promotion of Kushner’s remarks was fierce and brutal.
One X user tweeted Ivanka’s post and wrote: “Her husband, Jared, who was born into a family worth billions, explains to us how his tenacity led to his success. I learned that if I never give up on my dreams and work really hard, I can also be born into a wealthy family.”
Another mused: “Most trust fund babies are optimistic. It’s built into the free money.” Yet another said simply: “Clueless.”
In December, Ivanka took the stand in her father’s $370 million business fraud trial, where she testified that she didn’t know her penthouse apartment had been overvalued by millions in company records. Later that month, she was seen in Israel with Kushner visiting the site of the October 7 Hamas attacks.
