The family of Isaac Hayes lashed out at former President Donald Trump for using the late artist’s song in his controversial speech Friday at the National Rifle Association convention.
“The estate and family of Isaac Hayes DID NOT approve and would NEVER approve the use of ‘Hold On I’m Coming’ by Sam and Dave by Donald Trump at this weekend’s NRA convention,” a tweet said regarding the family’s thoughts. “Our condolences go out to the victims and families of Uvalde and mass shooting victims everywhere.”
After the shooting that occurred last week in Texas, Trump delivered a speech that rejected calls for gun control after 19 children lost their lives in the tragedy. Trump praised firearms, including the kind of military-style assault weapons used in the recent mass shooting. He then concluded his speech with a smile and wooden dance steps to the 1996 song “Hold On, I’m Coming,” written by Hayes and David Porter.
Multiple artists have – like the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Adele, REM, Rihanna and Aerosmith, and the estates of Tom Petty and Prince – have contacted Trump’s campaign organization demanding their music not be used without their permission.
