How I Met Your Mother wrapped up after nine seasons last May with a finale that left the majority of fans disappointed. In the DVD set, show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas show fans what could have been with the finale’s alternate ending.
In How I Met Your Mother’s finale, it’s revealed that “The Mother” aka Tracy, played by Cristin Milioti, dies. Her death had been alluded two in a pair of previous episodes, though many had held out hope that the show had not been built around a character who was to die from the beginning of the narration.
Furthermore, Milioti made Tracy an incredibly likeable character, one who made perfect sense for Josh Radnor’s Ted. Not only having Tracy die, but having Ted and Robin reunite several years later was the second blow to a fandom that had thought Ted had grown out of that fantasy with Robin and had found the enduring love he’d been searching for with Tracy.
How I Met Your Mother’s alternate ending sees Ted, Tracy, Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Marshall (Jason Segel), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) catching up at McLaren’s. When Lily muses about Ted’s arduous road to finding happiness with Tracy, Ted launches into a rundown of all the events that led to their meeting,
Ted starts off saying that in order for it to happen he had to, “get out of the apartment a couple of hours” for Marshall to propose to Lily. He also had to “Get beat up by a goat… teach the wrong class…” After Robin and Barney’s wedding, he had to take off at the exact right time so he could meet the “beautiful girl under a yellow umbrella.”
“Funny how sometimes, you just find things,” says Ted, adding, “and that kids, is how I met your mother.”
