A supermoon is a full moon that has reached the closest point to the earth during its elliptical orbit around the planet. And the best time to see one is during the night when they appear larger and brighter. Here’s what you need to know in order to catch March 2019’s “super worm moon.”

First and most importantly, when can people see the super worm moon?

The moon will reach its closest point to earth on Tuesday at 3:47 p.m. ET, but the moon won’t reach peak fullness until 9:43 p.m. ET, which is approximately four hours after the vernal equinox at 5:42 p.m. EST. Moonrise will then happen soon after but will vary depending on location. For cities in the continental U.S., moonrise is expected to occur between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. local time. Now, if you want to capture a good photo of the “super worm moon” it’s said to be best to aim for a time near moonrise because the moon will appear larger the closer it is to the horizon, due to an optical illusion.

What will the “super worm moon” look like?

Although tonight’s moon won’t be as big and bright as last month’s “super snow moon,” it will still be a photogenic spectacle that you won’t want to miss. As in the past, many supermoon watchers have captured intriguing and interesting photos around the world.

What can you do if you can’t view the “super worm moon” from outdoors

If you can’t make it outside during moonrise or are surrounded cloudy skies, you can watch the live stream of the “super worm moon” from the Virtual Telescope Project below.

When’s the next supermoon?

The “super worm moon” is the last supermoon of 2019, but new supermoons will return next year on March 9 and April 8.
