Supermodel Heidi Klum has been spending a lot of time with her four children in New York City lately, and headed out in the city’s Tribeca neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.
Klum, 43, took daughters Leni, 12, and Lou, 6, and sons Henry, 10, and Johan, 9, out for a day in New York Tuesday. The group was spotted walking about in Lower Manhattan. Klum looked every bit the off-duty model in a pair of flared jeans, a bohemian camisole and heels on the outing.
Since splitting from her ex-husband Seal in 2012, Klum has been a single parent, taking on duties of both the mother and the father when the kids are with her. Though Klum came under fire when some thought she was diminishing Seal’s involvement in the kids lives in an interview, the fashion mogul has since explained that increased duties are par for the course for parents who’ve split up.
“It is frustrating to me that some other media outlets are taking what was said in the article to suggest that I was aiming to malign my children’s father. Because I was not!” Klum told People. “In the article, I say that, as a single parent, ‘I’m a mom and a dad at the same time.’ And that is the case when I’m alone with our kids … and I assume the same rings true when they are with their dad.”
She continued, “As a single parent, you have so many roles – you are wearing all the hats. The mom hat, the dad hat, the chef hat, the teacher hat, the disciplinarian hat, the clown hat and the work hat. You have your hands full, but you just try your best because it’s all about raising happy and healthy kids. That’s all we both want.”
Klum has now been dating art dealer Vito Schnabel for two years. One of the reasons why the relationship with Schnabel works is that he understands that Leni, Lou, Henry and Johan come first – and that they take exotic vacations when the kids are with their father.
“My children always have come first and that is still the case. It feels amazing to be with a man who understands all of that, but we still find a lot of time to spend together, especially when the kids are spending time with their dad,” Klum said. “During that time we love to go away, just he and I. That’s our special time together.”
