HBO’s ‘Succession’ Will End With Season 4

The Emmy-winning HBO drama Succession is ending.

Creator and showrunner Jesse Armstrong revealed in an interview with the New Yorker that the upcoming fourth season would be the show’s last.

Armstrong said that there were several options that he discussed with his fellow writers on where to take the show next. They could make two shorter seasons, extend to a longer and looser series or finish the show now with a strong ending.

This news confirms the rumors that Succession would end in either its fourth or fifth season – something that had been teased since the show became one of HBO’s flagship dramas.

Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO, stated that Succession is unlikely to get a spinoff series, which is atypical of the franchise approach many major television networks take.

However, Armstrong said that there may still be an opportunity to return if there was still “an appetite” to explore another part of the Roy family’s world.

He also stated that he felt “conflicted” about ending the show. “I imagine I’ll be a little bit lonely, and wandering the streets of London in a funk, and wondering, ‘What the f— did I do?’ I’ll probably be calling you up in about six months asking if people are ready for a reboot,” he said.

Season four of Succession returns March 26 on HBO where the Roy family’s sale of their company to tech billionaire Lukas Matsson is imminent. A struggle commences as they contend with a future where they may not be as powerful economically, culturally and politically as they once were.
