Fans of the Harry Potter franchise were left nervous after a shocking rumor surfaced on that claimed a live-action television series set in the Wizarding World was in development. The Harry Potter book series has been turned into a massive franchise, with eight films based on the original novels being released and the spin-off prequel film series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them currently in production. The project is said to be in the early stages of development and could air on the HBO Max streaming service. Little has been revealed on this rumored television series, making it unclear if this is a reboot of the Harry Potter film series, or set in the same universe and simply focusing on a different story altogether.

The Harry Potter franchise has always managed to stay relevant even after the final entry in the film series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released in 2011, with Universal Studios opening two theme parks based on the franchise and the third film in Fantastic Beasts series already being in development. However, the Harry Potter fan base began to fall apart after the author of the book series J.K. Rowling made transphobic comments on Twitter. Actors from the Harry Potter series have distanced themselves from Rowling, including Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright and Katie Leung.

Many fans have spoken out against a live action TV series set in the Harry Potter universe, but if HBO Max moves ahead with the project those complaints are likely to fall on deaf ears.
