Celebrate National Donut Day with free donut promotions offered at Dunkin’ Donuts and Krisy Kreme only on Friday, June 5.

National Donut Day was created in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts and home-cooked meals to soldiers during WWI. Known as the Salvation Army’s “dough girls,” the women were credited with boosting morale of the soldiers. While the fun holiday tradition still raises awareness for the Salvation Army, it has mostly been taken over by sugary, fried confections.

Dunkin’ Donuts is celebrating National Donut Day with a promotion: each customer can get a free donut with the purchase of a beverage. Of course, a beverage at the donut chain costs more than one donut, so if you’d rather just have the donut then you might want to forget about the “free donut” idea and buy one instead.

Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t the only chain using a ‘buy one get one free’ promotion. Mid-Atlantic chain Cumberland Farms is also giving customers one free donut with the purchase of hot or iced coffee, but they have a time limit. Free donuts at Cumberland Farms are only available from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. In contrast, Krispy Kreme is offering free donuts without any sort of hidden charge in the U.S. and Canada.

Celebrities and companies everywhere are celebrating, from Sarah Michelle Gellar to a Delta Airlines pilot reportedly celebrated by getting passengers free donuts on a morning flight to Atlanta.

If you can’t find a free donut near you, National Donut Day is still a great excuse to ditch the diet, at least for one day.
