Hannah Anderson, Missing California Teen, Saved; Alleged Captor Dead

Hannah Anderson, who had been missing for a week, was found Saturday night near Morehead Lake, Idaho. Anderson’s alleged kidnapper and family friend, James DiMaggio, was shot dead by police during the rescue.

Anderson, 16, had last been seen at her cheerleading practice in San Diego County, Calif., on Aug. 3. On Aug. 4, the bodies of Anderson’s mother, Christina Anderson, and her brother Ethan, 8, were found at DiMaggio’s torched house.

Late on Wednesday night, a horseback rider who had been riding through Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, reported that he had spoken to a pair that matched the Amber Alert description of DiMaggio and Hannah, reported ABC News. On Friday, DiMaggio’s vehicle was found unoccupied.

By Saturday morning, the manhunt for DiMaggio and his captive intensified, with over 250 law enforcement officials searching some 300 square miles of wilderness. The campsite was located from the air by Saturday afternoon. Though no reports have been made about a shootout, it’s been confirmed that DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI tactical agent.

"Obviously we would have liked for Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in the court of law," San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said. "But that's not going to be the case."

Anderson was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter after she was rescued as a precautionary measure. She did not appear to have any serious injuries or ailments. Her father, Brett Anderson, is duly concern for his teenage daughter’s well-being and grieving for his losses. "I am nervous excited saddened 4 my wife and son," Brett Anderson texted CNN. "And worried what my daughter has been through."
